Therapeutic Laser Treatments
Therapeutic laser therapy is . . .
- Non-invasive
- Pain-free
- Surgery-free
- Drug-free
Laser therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses low level light energy (photons) to stimulate cell regeneration and increase blood circulation. More specifically, photons from the laser are absorbed by the mitochondria of the body’s cells, which leads to the release of ATP (the major fuel source or energy source for cells). With this extra energy, cells can then repair and heal themselves– leading to healed tissue, tendons, joints, and more.
Laser therapy has been utilized extensively for human ailments – you can read more about this therapy at the World Association for Laser Therapy by clicking here.
What can laser therapy for pets do?
- Reduce pain – including but not limited to pain associated with Arthritis (back, hip, knee, or neck pain), hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and other joint issues
- Decrease inflammation – especially for muscle/tendon/ligament injuries (such as cranial cruciate ligament tears, muscle strains, etc.)
- Improve healing – especially in chronic skin inflammation areas such as Lick granulomas or hot spots (and other non-healing wounds), ear infections, eosinophilic granulomas, or anal gland infections
- Improve nerve function – especially for intervertebral disc disease or degenerative myelopathy in dogs or other neurologic conditions in pets. Improved nerve function means your dog will know where his/her feet are and be able to walk better and farther.
- Increase blood flow – which enhances healing within the body
- Decrease Post-surgical healing time
How long is each treatment?
Most treatments are between 8 – 10 minutes at a time. Dr. Jessie recommends that each pet receive a laser treatment schedule (at least 6 treatments) to achieve optimum results. We tend to see improvement in our patients within the first 2-3 sessions.
Laser treatments are cumulative, so each additional treatment offers a chance of greater improvement for your pet.
We offer affordable laser packages to reduce the overall cost of treatment.
Does Laser Therapy Hurt?
No! Most pets fall asleep during the treatment. Your pet does not need to be shaved or sedated for laser therapy. Protective laser-type dog glasses (“Doggles”) may be placed over your dog’s eyes.
Why Should We Pair Laser Therapy With Acupuncture?
Both modalities serve to decrease inflammation, reduce pain, and “wake up” nerves. However, each modality achieves these goals by utilizing different mechanisms. By combining BOTH, we are better able to help your pet. Additionally, we have seen faster and better results when we utilize both modalities for our patients.
